The interesting history of the t-shirt goes from its humble beginnings “undercover” to the eye-catching piece of clothing we see today. They Began as Long Underwear

T-shirts started as one-piece undergarments with long sleeves and legs called a “union suit” (a “union” of a top and a bottom) invented in the 1800s. Women didn’t like wearing it, but male laborers, who needed to keep warm in the winter, quickly saw good sense and practicalities of union suits for them.

About Union Suits

The union suit had buttons running all the way up its front in addition to a buttoning flap across the backside. It didn’t take long to realize it would be much easier to get into and out of a union suit if it was cut into a top and a bottom.

Long Johns

Inventors called this new version “long johns.” The next step came when wearers asked if they really needed to keep closing and opening all those buttons. Someone figured that if, instead of cotton or wool, the long johns could be made of stretchier fabric, then the top could be pulled right over the head and snap right back into shape...no buttons necessary. The answer to this was “jersey,” a lightweight, knitted fabric. Several manufacturers began making the jersey long johns.

The Undershirt Hits the Marketplace

In 1904, the Cooper Underwear Company, better known today as Jockey International, advertised its own short-sleeved version of the long john top. The company called it, “The Bachelor Undershirt.”

We suggests that our customers come in and look through our standard color guide that we use. This is a sheet that allows you to see, first hand, what the ink color will look like. We want to share with you what we think is the best artwork practices for custom screen printing. Nashville has many screen printers but we are here to show you that we are different than all the rest! The most important component of the process is your artwork. Are you ready to be educated? Great! Here are three aspects of the importance of artwork that you never knew!

1.DPI matters: Have you ever taken a picture on your phone and posted it to social media, only to print it later on but the image turned out to be grainy and pixelated? That’s because the dpi of the image was not high enough to print a quality photo. We’ve all had it happen and its absolutely infuriating. The same goes for screen printing. We prefer to work with files that are anywhere from 200-300 dpi (dot per inch). Basically, in layman’s terms when the quality is poor then the quality of prodcut on the t-shirt is likely to suffer; however, when the quality meets the guidelines we have laid out then you are guaranteed a t-shirt that will leave you speechless!

2. Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop: Ok, so what about it? The truth is we are Apple snobs around here, but the reality is that in our business we want to print a t-shirt that exceeds every expectation that you may have. In order to do that we have to work with the best programs out there, which happens to be adobe illustrator and photoshop. Typically these are vector based .ai or .eps files, or high resolution pixel-baed images (BMP, JPG, PNG) that are at least 200-300 dpi (theres that word again!).

3. Ideas everywhere: Maybe you’re like me- the least creative person on the planet. 25 years later and some serious self awareness, I take responsibility for the fact that I’ll never, ever be creative. So, by now I assume you are wondering that magical question..why? Why would we pick St. Jude’s among so many terrific organizations? The truth is that we appreciate their main mission is to confront disease head on despite race, gender, or financial ability and that their love for children compels them to fight relentlessly for a cure. We feel a passion for giving to this organization and allowing our customers to be a part of the process because that is where the true connect lies. We hope our small act of generosity will inspire you to begin a dialog within yourself and search for what truly matters. Find a cause, one that stirs your heart, and join the fight. Because despite the initial sting of sacrifice you might feel, the feeling of unwavering dedication to a cure, ending world hunger, or orphans, etc. supersedes any momentary “feeling” that your new gadget from Christmas might provide.

So, I was standing in my kitchen this morning eating on the go, per my normal routine, when I looked over and noticed a lunch box hanging on the door handle. In the center it stated, “Promotional Products Work!” Although I could not decipher the company’s name, I know first hand that the message is spot on.

Yes, it’s true, a lunch box is a great promotional tool, but an even better way to display a promotional message is a t-shirt! I don’t know about you all in the cyber world, but I happen to love a free t-shirt.

T-shirts allow you to promote before the event occurs: Why not print 50 shirts and have them sent out or worn before your event occurs? This is a great way for conversation to begin about your event, organization, or outreach program you are trying to promote! The beautiful element to a t-shirt is that there are no limitations, they are fairly inexpensive to print and sell, and they can be recycled if the event is reoccurring.
T-shirts are not just a promotional avenue but they send a message: Lets face it, we have all seen some really incredible t-shirts, such as to Write Love on Her Arms, but we have also seen some sloppy work done, too. Nevertheless, each shirt displays a message to a particular audience.. For example, at the beginning of 2013 I attended the Passion Conference in Atlanta with 20 or so high schoolers- it was an exceptional experience to say the least! Days were filled with passionate speakers, incredibly charismatic worship, and one unifying message spoken over and over again- END IT MOVEMENT. Want to know how they promoted this message that I have seen countless times hundreds of miles away? A bright red X marked on t-shirts, hats, and whatever other materials they could print on. Want to know why? Because of the message its transmitting to my brain without any spoken words. Regardless of your views on church, slavery, or politics we all know that t-shirts are just one of many mediums for our messages to be displayed to the world!
T-Shirts are a customized piece: Want 4 letters? Done! Want a big bright X? Done! Want a picture of some really bad beach photos where your kids are screaming and some random guy is photo bombing it? Done! T-shirts are an excellent place to let the creativity flow because the designs and opportunities are endless! Also, t-shirts are extremely versatile, meaning they look great on young, older, men, women, or even children.

In the screen printing business there is one common and very popular misconception about sample shirts. We see a lot of customers request one shirt to ensure that their vision translates perfectly; however, the unfortunate reality is that sample printing is very timely and costly. So, I thought we could share the process to let you know how labor intensive screen printing can be.

To begin, the art must be prepped for the print. In order to do this the design is separated by color into different layers. You see, for each color that is present in your design represents one screen. For example, 3 colors equals 3 screens. 4 colors equals 4 screens, etc. The next step in the process is film. When your image is printed out, it is bonded to a special type of transparency film. Now remember each layer of the image must require its very own film, which requires us to separate each portion of the image. Therefore, 3 colors equals three separates films.

Still with me?

Good, because this next part is extremely delicate and important so stay with me! Thus far we’ve talked about art work, layering colors, film and words like photo emulsion. Next up is the screen. The artist then takes your film and burns a copy onto a silk screen that has been coated in emulsion, dried, and then placed under an ultraviolet light. Areas that are clear help harden the emulsion and after screens are washed (hosepipe, water, ya know that sort of thing!) the areas of emulsion that were not exposed to light get washed away leaving us a transfer of negative image. Now remember, and this why it’s so time consuming and difficult to do just one sample, we must do this for each layer that’s present in the image.

Each screen is then attached to the press and ink is squeegeed through the screen layer by layer until your final image appears. After this step is completed the shirts are cured by running through an industrial dryer, folded, and shipped off!

Screen printing is a process, a very delicate one that I can guarantee you do not want to rush! It is about pulling apart the image and layering the colors on top of one another and finding the perfect balance within each screen. The beautiful part is that we at TakeHold Printing are more than happy to provide a mock up that will help our clients visualize exactly what the shirt will look like!

It’s really not that complicated....to pick a shirt. And the color. And maybe even the style (Long sleeve, shorts sleeve, pocket tee); however, to some of us in the screen printing business know just how difficult it can appear to certain clients. Possibly even exhausting...

Here are some points to consider before you sit down with your local screen printing company (TakeHold Printing- are there any other options?!) and discuss having t-shirts printed.

First things first: Think shirt. What is that you are looking for? Is this something you want to cut cost for or is this for your local country club aficionado who knows the fiber count for every shirt hung in his custom made cedar plank closet? This is entirely speculation but, I am betting you are looking for something in the Gildan family or if you really want to shake things up, possibly even Comfort Colors which will run you a little more.

Second: Don’t get hung up on colors. Let face it- you want this shirt to look like you just paid big bucks for it- because chances are you did! But the reality is that there are 10 different hues of green and yellow and orange and blue and pink (get the picture). Anyone looking for your business will gladly and willingly, I might add, help you labor over Irish Green vs Turf Green on top of Daisy. But, the reality is that colors are difficult to pick, so trust your gut and don’t over think it!

Third: Come prepared! Before your initial email or sit down meeting, determine your expectations. Ask questions and let us guide you to a final product that exceeds your expectations.
